Get to know your students with these fun activities

Get to know your students with these fun activities Many of you have likely started your teach abroad placements and are still getting to know your classroom (or maybe even classrooms!) of students. Whether you’re an ESL teacher or a certified teacher in a public or international school, the better you know your students as individuals, the better placed you’ll be when it comes to addressing their learning needs on an individual basis. The great thing is you can make getting to know your students a fun process by reserving a small amount of time at the beginning or end of a class every once in a while for a short game that’s both enjoyable and educational. So take some time to connect by trying one of these three activities!Twenty questionsNot only is this a great opportunity to learn a little bit more about your students’ personal interests, it also gets them asking each other questions to problem solve. To play this game, each person thinks of a person or an object, and their partner has to figure out which person or thing the y have chosen using 20 questions that result in a yes or no answer. These questions could be anything from “Is this person male or female?” to “Is this person a musician?” This might also teach you a little more about cultural icons, depending on where you are teaching.Would you rather...?This activity is particularly good for getting to know your students better, because it asks them to identify their personal preferences.Keep a list of questions for your students that start, “Would you rather…” Some examples include “Would you rather be able to fly or read minds?”, “Would you rather be famous or be the best friend of a famous person?”, “Would you rather have more time or more money?”You can have your students participate in this activity in a number of ways: you can either have them move to one side of the room if they answer one way, the other side of the room if they answer the other way; you can ask students individually; or you can group students and ask them to come up with their own questions and then share them. This game is also a good way to gather some feedback around classroom activity. For example, you could ask more learning-oriented questions and see what preferences your students have.Q&A sessionSometimes just the open opportunity to ask questions can be fun and beneficial. Whenever you’re left with a few minutes at the end of a class, you can open the floor for them to ask you any questions that they’d like. You can either theme the questions (things we studied in class today, cultural questions, new vocabulary, or anything else you can think of), or you can let them ask whatever they’d like! When this exercise is centered around classroom lessons and activity, it will benefit all students, even those that choose not to ask questions, because though only a few students may actually ask questions aloud, many will have similar questions. If you’re working in a country where students seem particularly discouraged from asking questions of you, you can try to overcome this by grouping students into smaller groups and asking them to come up with one question as a group to ask you all together. Then no one student is singled out.Whatever activities you choose, make sure you remember to model for your students so that they can see what the game looks likeâ€"you’ll have a higher participation rate this way!

How Do You Get Paid For Your Time?

How Do You Get Paid For Your Time? The School Bus-drivers, the school bus drivers and the personal assistant(Personal assistants) have something to do with this when they are being paid by the School bus driver's employer to be a tutor. This is something that is done quite regularly and not just with the school buses, but with all other types of transport vehicles in order to get the maximum income, at the minimum expense. You might wonder why someone would go to a school and talk to children without paying them for their time. Many times, it is because of fear. Fear that if they do not pay for their time, the owner will lose their job. When a tutoring service has become successful and they are earning quite a bit of money, the owner of the tutoring company would rather see the new money generated go to them, rather than the person who arranged the meeting with the student. So, how do you get paid for your time?Well, you are an independent contractor and you must choose the work that yo u are going to do. This is your career, so, make sure that you know the work that you will be doing, before signing a contract.A tutor can do lots of things for a student. They can learn to write, play sports, put up their own resume, learn how to fix computers and many more. But, sometimes, they need to use their creativity skills to come up with their own idea and they need to find an activity that they can do on their own.A tutor can usually find this task quite interesting and they may have some time to spend doing it. So, this is where they start making money, as they are not actually working. This is a way to make the owner happy and at the same time they will earn some extra money too.If a student wants to talk to a tutor for some reason, this can really help and it will not cost them anything either. So, the parents should know about the nature of the job and how it is offered so that they can take advantage of it.

Accommodation in Porto

Accommodation in Porto What Type of Accommodation Can You Get in Porto? ChaptersTypes of Accommodation in PortoStaying in Porto City CentreStaying Near the River DouroStaying in Porto’s Suburbs“We travel to change not of place, but ideas.” - Hippolyte TaineTravelling can involve discovering new places, visiting tourist attractions, or just relaxing. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about a given country or city. Some might even seem like somewhere you’d like to move.Spain and Portugal share the Iberian Peninsula with the latter being smaller than its neighbour. While Portugal is a popular tourist destination, many opt to visit Lisbon (Lisboa) or the Algarve. However, the largest city in northern Portugal is a fantastic destination for tourists and will be included on most tourist itineraries through the country. So while the number of new hotels in Portugal has increased by 37% in recent years, you’ll need to think about which area to stay in and the type of accommodation you’ll be staying in.Whether you want a studio apartment in the city centre or a charming holiday home by the Atlantic Ocean, Porto’s got a lot of tricks up its sleeve. Holiday rents, hotels, or hostels, you’re spoilt for choice.Feeling a bit lost? Here’s a quick rundown! The less you spend on accommodation, the more you can spend on food! (Source: matunjic)For a Modest BudgetLike most places, hotels are the most popular type of accommodation for tourists in Porto. The city is full of typical hotels at good rates (on average £50 per night for a double room). This is the simplest type of accommodation to book, especially thanks to online platforms like Booking.com and Hotels.com. Hotels account for around a quarter of the accommodation in Porto.More and more tourists are opting for furnished apartments and flats.  We most often think of Airbnb for this type of accommodation but there are other platforms including Homeaway and Housetrip. You can get a studio apartment in the centre of Porto for around £50 a night. You can rent the entire property or part of it. This means you can either rent a room in a flat with the rest of the family staying there or have the whole place to yourself. This is one of the cheapest options and great for those who travel a lot.Do you know what a pensão is?This is a guesthouse where the owners will probably do everything they can to make you feel at home. For around £40 a night, you can enjoy the comfort and the freedom of having a room to yourself! On a BudgetA youth hostel is another option for travellers and there are plenty of them in Porto. This is probably due to how many students and young people visit the city.  These won’t be like a top-floor apartment in the city centre but rather dormitories for 4-20 people. However, they are a good option if comfort isn’t a priority. For around a tenner a night, you’ll have a bed in a shared room. A lot of youth hostels are in great locations and they're a great way to save and enjoy the city!If you’re on a tight budget, Porto’s the perfect city. You can enjoy Porto for free through “CouchSurfing”.So what is CouchSurfing?Put simply, you can stay at someone’s house for free. This is a great way to experience the city, especially if you want t o practise your Portuguese and hang out with the portuense (the locals). You won’t need to pay anything, but it might be nice to treat your hosts to a gift! The boldest amongst you might even consider a flat-swap with a local family. The concept is simple: someone stays at yours while you stay at theirs, which is another way to stay in Porto for free.So of all these types of accommodation, which would you prefer? You’ll probably notice by visiting Porto that there are tonnes of cultural and historic attractions all over the city. There are two ways to stay in Porto: in the centre or the surrounding neighbourhoods. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.Find out more about Porto's neighbourhoods.Staying in Porto City CentreYou might be thinking about staying in a hotel or youth hostel in the centre of Porto. Whether you’re staying in a furnished studio apartment or a charming hotel, a lot of us like to stay near businesses, amenities, and tourist attractions so that we can m ake the most of our time. If you're a little too old for bunk beds, then youth hostels may not be for you. (Source: Hans)This is a good idea because Porto is accessible, especially for tourists. There are two main areas in the city centre.Find out more about the cost of visiting Porto.Staying in the Old TownThe old town is in the heart of the city and most of the tourist attractions can be found there. The neighbourhood known as Ribeira is the central point of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s home to:Porto CathedralLello BookstoreIgreja de Santa ClaraSão Bento StationAnd many others!Of course, this area tends to cost more than other neighbourhoods. The higher the demand for an area, the higher the cost of accommodation. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t find a nice flat for a decent amount. (Source: bildundso)Of course, sometimes the popular areas can cost you a fortune.Find out more about visiting Porto.Staying Near the River DouroThe neighbourhoods by the Douro river each specialise in certain activities. The Old Town side of the river is home to restaurants and typical businesses. The views of the Dom Luís I Bridge are also great. In short, it’s a great area for a good time.By crossing the bridge, you’ll arrive in Vila Nova de Gaia. This is the area to go to if you want to taste some Port wine. If you’re travelling to enjoy the local cuisine and produce, you have to go here!Staying in Porto’s Suburbs“Travelling is returning to the essential” - Tibetan ProverbAs you’ll have understood, Porto’s city centre can sometimes to be difficult to find accommodation in.That said, there are plenty of places outside of the city centre worth staying in. If you like the feeling of being on holiday, you'll probably want to stay in a nice hotel. (Source: ManuelaJaeger)While there’s less demand in the suburbs, there’s still a good choice of hotels, hostels, and holiday accommodation. Let’s look at the suburbs!BoavistaThis area in the northwest of the city is the best place to meet locals. While there are fewer tourist attractions in the area, you can find plenty of trendy restaurants and luxury boutiques.  This is where you can find some of Porto’s best nightlife but it can still be quite expensive to stay there.Despite being a suburb, there’s a good choice of accommodation.MiragaiaIf you’re looking for private holiday rentals, an Airbnb with a parking space, or a nice flat with a kitchen, Miragaia might be where you should stay. This is a lovely area just a stone’s throw from the River Douro. This is near to the old town and several popular attractions (including the Jardim do Carregal) and you can enjoy the peace and quie t of the area. Since you’ll be outside of the city centre, you’ll find hotels, pensão, hostels, etc.Discover the best time of year to visit Porto.MassarelosMassarelos is to the west of Porto and is the best value-for-money. The student area of the city is home to art galleries, gardens (including the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal), and a lively lifestyle.Between bohemian and trendy, Massarelos has something for everyone, including access to the old town. Whether you want a private flat, a charming hotel, or short-term rental, you can find them for around €10-20 a night. The price is one of the advantages of staying in the suburbs, but it’s not the only one.  As you’ll have understood, in the surrounding suburbs, accommodation is cheaper.Whether it's a flat or house by the Douro, a two-star hotel, or a bed in a local’s home, Porto is a city with endless possibilities. While it’s generally cheaper than the UK, you should make sure you do your research before you go.The city centre is home to a lot of tourist attractions but it's competing against the suburbs away from all the hustle and bustle. It’s up to you to choose where you want to stay. Before you visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites and Roman ruins, attend wine tastings, or enjoy a river cruise, you might want to learn some of the language. What is it Like to Attend University of Richmond

What is it Like to Attend University of Richmond The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Rafy earned his Bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Richmond in 2013. He is now a Washington D.C. tutor specializing in Calculus tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, Biology tutoring, and several other subjects. Check out his review of the University of Richmond: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Rafy: The University of Richmond campus is beautiful, secluded, and safe. The campus is only 15 minutes away from downtown Richmond and several shopping areas. Having a car is a big plus since the city's transportation system is not great. However, the university provides shuttles to the popular shopping areas and to several volunteering destinations. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Rafy: Most professors do not have teaching assistants. Given the small class sizes, the professors are available during class and in their offices. Most professors have office hours, and they are available to set up meetings outside the classroom. Academic advisers are also available throughout the semester, and they set up meetings before semester registration to make sure their students are on track to graduate. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Rafy: Over 90% of the students choose to live on campus all four years. I think that shows that campus life is absolutely a big part of the college experience at the University of Richmond. There are several dorms, townhouses, and apartments to choose from. You can also choose to live in a single bedroom or have roommates. Students are also allowed to purchase parking passes for their cars all four years. There are several dining options on campus. The main cafeteria has fantastic food with a wide variety of options. There are also several special dining days like Caribbean nights, sushi nights, etc. In addition, there are several other dining options, such as fast food and sandwich shops around campus. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Rafy: The programs most represented at the University of Richmond are business-related, like business administration, marketing, and international studies. I majored in biology with a concentration in pre-health studies because I wanted to apply to dental school. The university has a good pre-health program, with several events and guest speakers to raise awareness about the program. This is reflected in the high acceptance rate to medical and dental schools. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Rafy: The students in general are very friendly. Most students are always looking to make new friends, especially during freshman year. Given the small school size, seeing the same people on a daily basis also helps in making friends. Greek life is big on campus, and it plays a significant role in the campus social life. However, most of their events are open to all students, which means most students do not feel pressured to join Greek life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Rafy: The Career Center at the University of Richmond has several good resources for students, starting with writing resumes and cover letters to helping with interview preparation and the career search. The Career Center website is also very helpful, as several companies post their internships and post-graduation positions on the website. They actively look to recruit students from the university. Several reputable companies, especially ones in the Washington, D.C. area and New York City, recruit students and conduct interviews on campus throughout the academic year. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Rafy: There are several study areas that are readily available to students. Dorms have study lounges, but they are not very big. Most students choose to study in academic buildings or the library, which is open 24/7. The library can get crowded during busy evenings, but you can always find a place to work. There are different sections designed for different study habits. There are silent areas, quiet areas, group-study areas, and rooms available for individual or group work. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Rafy: Richmond is a great city. It is not a very big city, but it is also not a small one. The city has great history that is well presented in many areas. There are many local restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries in the area. There are several festivals throughout the year that give Richmond its own identity. In addition, the downtown area is very alive during the weekdays and weekend. Many students go downtown for these festivals, restaurants, and other events. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Rafy: The undergraduate student body is just over 3,000 students. It is small enough to see the same faces on a daily basis, but it is big enough to always meet new people. The class sizes are typically small. The introductory courses never exceeded 30 students per class. The higher-level courses that I took, which were in the science field, never exceeded 12-16 students per class. I was very pleased with the small class size because I always knew that I could raise my hand and ask the professor to repeat any concept I did not understand during class. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Rafy: One of my favorite professors at the University of Richmond is Dr. Krista Stenger. She was the reason I became interested in molecular biology. I took several courses with her. She was more than a professorshe was a mentor to any student who sought her help. She also assigned students to do part of her research in the immunology lab course. I gained experience in several lab techniques that most students do not gain during their undergraduate studies. In addition, she was very excited to help me with my applications to dental school and applications to work in research labs. Check out Rafys tutoring profile. What are transferable skills - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / What are transferable skills - Introvert Whisperer What are transferable skills? Transferable skills are abilities and capacities that are significant and helpful across various everyday issues: socially, expertly, and at school. They are compact abilities. Individuals normally consider their transferable skills while applying for a job or when thinking about a career change. Employers frequently search for individuals who can show a good arrangement of transferable abilities. Fortunately you already have transferable skills; youve grown such skills and abilities throughout your life, at school and maybe at college, at home and in your social life, and also through any involvement in the work-place. It is usually essential that you can recognize and give instances of the transferable skills that you have developed. This will go far to influencing forthcoming businesses that you are appropriate for the job. Why are transferable skills important? Although somewhat gentler abilities than those specifically identified with a position, transferable skills are extraordinarily significant to managers. In addition to the fact that they show that youd be a solid match for the group, they can likewise exhibit what an applicant can convey to a job, and the amount theyve gained from past positions or encounters. So if you’re currently lacking background in the field youre searching for work in, transferable abilities can be a great way to highlight why youre ideal for the job. Examples of when this can be useful include entry-level positions, and those looking to change careers.   What are some examples of transferable skills? Although this is in no way, shape or form a complete rundown of transferable skills, here are some incredible instances of transferable skills you can use in your CV: Leadership This ability is to a great degree flexible, and while its normally connected to the manager positions, being a decent pioneer is fundamental in pretty much every employment â€" regardless of whether just in a few circumstances. To reference it in your CV, refer to times where you’ve demonstrated great leadership â€" whether it’s through motivating others in order to achieve a shared goal, leading a project, heading up training and development for a team, or even through your hobbies and interests. Time management Time management is a vital skill for any role, that not only proves you can work to deadlines â€" but also that you’re able to complete tasks in the most time-effective way, create to-do-lists, delegate, ask for help, and break up projects accordingly. Whether it’s that you’ve had experience stacking shelves within a set time in a retail store, you’ve completed projects within a deadline, or you’ve carried out construction work that met the time-sensitive needs of a client, you’ll have at least one example of time management to reference in your CV. Prioritization Prioritizing tasks successfully is essential if you need to complete anything, on time, and to an elevated standard. That is the reason its a key ability that most businesses appreciate. Demonstrate youre ready to evaluate your remaining burden, alter your timetable, and sort out errands arranged by significance by giving unmistakable precedents in your CV. For instance, it may be the case that your capacity to be fierce and say no to specific undertakings empowered you to finish others which had a larger amount of significance, or you executed efficient systems to complete little errands quicker. Delegation While delegation is primarily imperative for directors, bosses, or anybody in a senior position, that doesnt mean those without a foundation in the executives arent ready to show this aptitude. For instance, on the off chance that youve at any point coached or guided somebody (regardless of whether it was grinding away or t school), or prepared another associate in a specific framework, system, or errand, youll have the capacity to demonstrate you could be a decent delegator. Its about how you outline your abilities, the precedents you give, and how you connect back to the criteria indicated part of the expected set of responsibilities. Listening Lets be honest; everybody is likely to have great listening skills, regardless of where your experience lies. This means showing them in your CV ought to be simple. Consider times where your capacity to listen all around brought about a positive result regardless of whether its that youre extraordinary at adhering to guidelines (which implied your work was done explicitly to a customers necessities), youre ready to assimilate learning immediately when educated (whether it was in a gathering, at college, or anyplace else), or you conveyed fantastic client benefit by listening cautiously to a clients needs. Communication Although its especially critical in client confronting enterprises, great correspondence is a to a great degree adaptable expertise that is an essential piece of each job â€" which adds to the smooth running of any work environment. Fortunately, that implies everybody has it. Instances of relational abilities could extend from occurrences where you spoke with a client or customer to satisfy their necessities or resolve an issue, to times where you cooperated with your associates to accomplish a joint objective. Research and analysis Numerous jobs require some level of research and analysis capacity â€" making it a vital skill to make known to managers. The models you incorporate may contrast contingent upon the job and whats required (especially if the opportunity calls for harder abilities, e.g. learning of Google Analytics), yet a fundamental dimension of research and investigation skills can be appeared in anything from college expositions, to any type of social affair, sorting out, and assessing data â€" regardless of whether its business figures, site visits, or specialized reports. The skills above are just some of the transferable or soft skills that are useful and relevant throughout many different areas of our lives. Reflect upon on your own life and experiences to identify other personal skills you possess that are not included here. University of Wisconsin-Madison A Student Interview

University of Wisconsin-Madison A Student Interview Samantha earned her bachelors degree in microbiology and genetics from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She specializes in algebra tutoring, anatomy tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, she shares her experience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Samantha: The campus is very easy to navigate, and is right next to the state capitol and downtown. Madison is very bike-friendly, and theres a bus system that can get you anywhere you need to go. The university provides students with bus passes each semester. Its very difficult to own and use a car on campus, simply because theres nowhere to park. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Samantha:Ive been able to forge wonderful relationships with my professors because theyre so personable and accessible. They really care about their students, and many of them have open door policies. My advisers have been great and have done their best to help me sort out requirements for my double major. Most of the TAs Ive had have been good as well. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Samantha:I lived in the only all-freshman dorm on campus, which was very social. Everyone was in the same boat of not knowing anyone and made an effort to reach out. The dorm administrators also put together countless activities for us and tried their hardest to make the dorms feel like home. Other dorms have different vibes depending on how many upperclassmen are living in them. The dining halls on campus are good, fairly priced, and easy to get to. I remember running across the street from my dorm in the middle of winter to grab some ice cream at the dining hall because its just so good. There are always more events happening on campus than you can attend, and there are definitely many clubs and organizations to join. The student organization fairs are a great place to see whats happening and find people with similar interests. Its so easy to get involved because theres something for everyone. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Samantha:UW is definitely a STEM school. The humanities are also very well represented and very diverse, but most of the funding goes to STEM programs. Madison has a reputation to uphold in the biological sciences, and as such, the biochemistry, genetics, and microbiology departments are very well respected. Engineering and computer science also have a significant presence. I studied genetics and microbiology because of my interest in disease. My departments are very well funded because of the impacts they have made in the field of scientific discovery, and I believe they use their funding wisely. We have fantastic labs with new, up-to-date equipment, and we learned cutting-edge techniques to use in research. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Samantha:Greek life is definitely present on campus, but it isnt overwhelming at all. It isnt as large as it is at many other universities, and most of the Greek housing is sequestered to a specific part of campus.I thought making friends as a freshman was relatively easy. I joined a student organization filled with outgoing people, and I made an effort to find people in my dorm to befriend. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Samantha:I havent had to use the Career Center services on campus, but Ive only heard good things. Each college on campus tends to sponsor a career fair every semester, and some big names show up including Google, Microsoft, Promega, and DuPont. Its a really great opportunity to network and find a job or internship. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Samantha:We have many different libraries on campus that are great for studying and group work. Theyre also scattered all over campus, so you never have to trek too far to get to one. The student unions on campus arent great study spots, but they are used for group work or just hanging out with friends. The Union Terrace during the summer becomes a hotspot for social gatherings and fun in Lake Mendota. The dorm lounges will vary greatly depending on the dorm, but plenty of people use them to study in. Describe the surrounding town. Samantha:Madison is a fantastic city with a distinct personalityit captured my heart the first time I visited. Madison offers plenty of opportunities to go sailing and swimming in the summer. As the capital city of Wisconsin, theres always something going on in town. The music scene is great and everyones always friendly. Off the top of my head, I can think of six significant venues that are always hosting some sort of entertainmentwhether that be a band, comedian, play, or orchestral performance. Finding things to do in winter gets a little more difficult simply because you wont want to walk anywhere in the cold weather, but there are certainly still things going on. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Samantha:Madison has about 30,000 undergrads, which is fairly sizeable. Depending on your classes and class standing, they can range from 15 individuals to about 300. The larger classes are always taught by a professor and usually have smaller discussion sessions once a week led by a TA. I never felt like the class sizes were an issue because the professors are still very accessible via email, office hours, and review sessions. You tend to lean on your TAs more in the large classes because you interact with them more, despite the fact they arent doing the teaching. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Samantha:Honestly, choosing one moment is a struggle for me because my experience at UW was so wonderful. As a microbiology major, I was required to take a laboratory course that taught us many modern research methods, and at the end of the semester we were taught how to brew beer from start to finish. Each lab group was assigned a different yeast, and we were to make one proper brew and one improper brew by changing fermentation conditions. At the end, we sampled the beer using gas chromatography to analyze its contents, and those of us who were 21 also used sensory analysis. We also compared the differences in taste and gas content in the proper and improper beers to learn what different brewing conditions can cause the yeast to do. It was an incredibly gratifying experience, despite the fact our beers werent very good! Check out Samanthas tutoring profile.
